A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 8, 2011 at St. Boniface Church in Elgin, NE with Rev. Ross Burkhalter officiating and interment at St. Boniface Cemetery. Music was provided by Mark and Julie Dwyer at the wake service, St. Boniface Choir and Laura McPhillips at the Mass, and were accompanied by organist, Rosie Schueths. Pallbearers were Andy Beckman, Adam Starman, Jacob Hankla, Bruce Dinslage, Zane Ruther, Kenny Roth and Jim Roth. Honorary Pallbearers were Jerome’s granddaughters.

Jerome Bruno Roth, son of Frank L. and Catherine M. (Heithoff) Roth, was born May 16, 1927 at Elgin, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St Boniface Church and attended St. Boniface School in Elgin, NE. He helped his father farm and then moved to Omaha, where he worked in the stock yards in 1948. He returned to Elgin where he resumed farming.

On September 1, 1955, Jerome was united in marriage with Bernice C. Koenig at rural St. John’s Church near Clearwater, NE. The couple made their home on a farm northeast of Elgin where Jerome farmed and they raised their four children: Kathy, Janis, Lori and Mary.
Jerome enjoyed fishing, playing cards, gardening, yard-work, going to the coffee shop to visit with people and spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #2411 and a lifelong member of St Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin.

He is survived by his wife Bernice of Elgin, NE; four daughters and their families: Kathy McPhillips and husband Dan of Lindsay, NE and children Tammy (Luke) Kaufman, Julie (Tim) Campbell, Karla, Michelle and Laura McPhillips; Jan Starman and husband Rick of Petersburg, NE and children Adam, Amanda and Juliann Starman; Lori Beckman and husband Gary of Elgin, NE and children Andy, Makayla and Erin Beckman; Mary Beth Hankla and husband Brian of King George, VA and children Jacob and Bethany Hankla; two great-grandchildren: Owen and Oliver Kaufman of Meadow Grove, NE; one sister: Kathleen Ruther and husband Bernard of Petersburg, NE.

Jerome was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Roman, Albert, Arthur and Orlandis Roth; three sisters: Sr. Gladys Roth, Leora Dinslage and Juliann Roth.
