In Memory Of
Melvin B. Salber

Melvin Bernard Salber, son of Will and Margaret (Stoltz) Salber was born June 3, 1931 on a farm southwest of Elgin, NE. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church and attended school at St. Boniface Schools. Melvin joined the US Army in July 1952, serving in the Korean War. He finished his GED while in the service, and attained the rank of Sergeant.

After leaving the army, he returned to farming southwest of Elgin and married Elizabeth Schuster on November 12, 1956 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Neligh, NE. He worked many years at the Elgin locker and helped come up with the special recipe for the Thanksgiving Bazaar sausage.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Elgin where he was an EME for many years. He was also very active in Cursillo, the American Legion, VFW, Knights of Columbus and he served as an ASCS board member.

Melvin loved working his land and caring for his animals. He was fond of his John Deere tractors and often worked on them himself. He enjoyed fishing and polka music. Melvin and Betty enjoyed square dancing and often traveled to neighboring towns to dance. In his later years, Melvin had to carry portable oxygen, due to pulmonary hypertension, but he kept active and still managed to attend family events. He was always an avid reader and discovered the personal computer after the need for oxygen limited his physical activity. He loved sending e-mails and doing research online to satisfy his thirst for learning.

Melvin is survived by his wife Elizabeth (Betty) of Elgin; 2 daughters: Carol Brennan and husband Mike of Omaha; Mary Jo Wortman and husband Jim of Milford; 4 sons: David Salber and wife Brenda of Omaha; Mark Salber of Clearwater; William Salber and wife Jerri of Omaha; Paul Salber and wife Carol of Omaha; 11 grandchildren: Aaron and Matt Brennan; Devin, Seth, Logan and Reid Wortman; Billy, Marissa, Madison Dalton and Audrey Salber; 1 brother: Delbert Salber of Elgin; 3 sisters: Vera Buelt and husband Lavern of Hillsboro, OR; Josephine Schrad and husband Al of Elgin; Gladys Reicks and husband Rollie of Elgin.

He was preceded in death by his parents Will and Margaret Salber.
