Hugo loved to fish; taking trips to Minnesota and Hawaii, along with fishing off the coast of Texas during the winters. Hugo and Louise spent every summer enjoying the Black Hills of South Dakota with friends and family. On July 3, 2010, the couple celebrated 76 years of marriage.

Hugo was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and Holy Name. His faith was important to him and he enjoyed reading his prayer book. Hugo and Louise were instrumental in the development of the Petersburg Senior Center in Werner Hall.
