Elgin
Established in 1892 by partners H.P. Shoemaker and
W.E. Brooks, the business was known as Shoemaker & Brooks
Hardware, Furniture and Undertaking. In 1903, Mr. Brooks bought
out his partner and the store’s name became known as W.E.
Brooks until 1970 when the store was discontinued.
Along with the mortuary business, Brooks (and later Huffman)
provided ambulance service to the community from 1929 until
1973, at which time the volunteer fire department took over
the service.
W.E. Brooks owned and operated the funeral home until his
death on November 2, 1960. On January 1, 1961, the business
was purchase by R.B. “Rick” Huffman, the grandson
of Mr. Brooks and was renamed Huffman’s Brooks Chapel.
Rick, a native of Elgin, had returned in 1950 after completing
embalming college and had managed the business since 1954.
The mortuary division of the store was located in the back
of the furniture store until 1956 when it was moved to a newly
renovated building on the corner of 2nd and Pine Streets,
where it is currently is today.
On October 1, 2007, Rick Huffman retired and sold the business
to Tony Levander, and became Huffman-Levander Funeral Home.
Clearwater
Established in 1921 by Walter Snider, the business
was known as Walter Snider Furniture & Undertaking. As
was a custom of the time, this mortuary was operated along
with a furniture store and was located in the back of the
building. Mr. Snider also provided ambulance service to the
community for many years.
Mr. Snider purchased and renovated the home on the corner
of 2nd & Montana Streets. He moved the mortuary business
to this location and it continues to remain there today. Walter
Snider continued to own and operate the funeral home until
his death in 1965, at which time, the business was sold to
R. B. “Rick” Huffman of Elgin and was renamed
Huffman’s Snider Chapel.
Mr. Huffman served the families of Clearwater, Ewing and
surrounding areas for more than 40 years before retiring and
selling the business to Tony Levander on October 1, 2007.
It was at this time the business was renamed to Huffman-Levander
Funeral Home.
